The Purpose

Be Your Own Advocate is a comprehensive workshop that equips participants with practical tools and techniques to gain the confidence to take control over their life.

 

The Be Your Own Advocate workshop offers a collection of life skills including but not limited to self-discovery, value-based decision making, boundary setting, conflict resolution and good communication. The skills provided focus on strengthening self-esteem, boosting motivation, and expanding personal power.

The Problem

Who knows your needs, beliefs, feelings, and thoughts better than you?  How does it impact your well-being when you do not take ownership of your feelings, beliefs, expressions, and actions?

 

Adversity is inevitable. Uncertainty is imminent. Vulnerability is prevalent. Adversity, uncertainty, or vulnerability may be perceived as negatives, which impact one’s well-being. A gyre of feelings may fester such as anxiety, resentment, shame, anger, bitterness, sadness, frustration and/or fear, which derails one’s self-esteem. Not knowing how to address adverse situations makes us feel powerless, hopeless, and/or worthless.

 

What if you had the tools to transform challenge into a source of knowledge?  The Be Your Own Advocate workshop shifts downers and letdowns into uplifting and empowering opportunities.

The Program Outline

The experiential workshop is comprised of three extensive parts facilitated through interactive activities.

The workshop engages participants in:

Part 1 Introduction: Advocacy and the Impact on Mental Health

  1. The meaning and importance of self-advocacy
  2. The impact of self-advocacy on mental health
  3. The qualities, principles, and skills of an advocate
Part 2 Personal Power: Assess, Develop, and Practice
  1. Self-evaluation of advocacy skills
  2. Introduction of the award-winning transformative model to self-advocacy:
    • Self-examination and discovery of one’s purpose
    • Asserting values, beliefs, and making decisions
    • Setting up clear boundaries
    • 16-scaled options to resolve adversity
    • 5Rs to develop a realistic, practical, and personalized action plan
    • 4-different styles of communication methods to be assertive
  3. Construct a personal action plan
  4. Practice your skills and receive feedback

Part 3: Conclude with SELF Commitment Credo

  1. Peer-evaluation of participant advocacy skills
  2. Request and receive feedback gracefully
  3. Conclude with presenting personal credo to self-advocacy
