When “Rational” Turns Radical: What We Can Learn from the Zizian Cult and Why It Matters Now
Personal Responsibility
When logic is used not to enlighten, but to isolate, exploit, and radicalize.
A chilling New York Times investigation exposes the truth behind the so-called Zizians—a fringe cult born from the rationalist movement. What began as a pursuit of truth ended in six deaths, extremist doctrine, and psychological manipulation. This isn’t just a story about a cult. It’s a wake-up call for parents, educators, young adults, and anyone guiding the next generation.
From Intellectual Curiosity to Moral Collapse
The Zizians emerged from communities advocating for AI safety and supposedly altruistic values. But under the influence of Ziz LaSota, the movement twisted into radical veganism, anti-societal living, and bizarre practices like unihemispheric sleep.
They didn’t just challenge norms—they dismantled them, using ideological extremism to recruit and control young minds.
And that control came at a deadly cost.
Who Was Most Vulnerable—and Why?
The Zizians didn’t just prey on outsiders or extremists. They targeted the bright, idealistic, and emotionally vulnerable—often neurodivergent individuals, including many trans women. They were promised purpose and logic, but were met with pressure to:
- Cut ties with family
- Adopt extremist rituals
- Embrace violence as “heroic responsibility”
This is coercion cloaked in intellect and the impact can be detrimental.
A Trail of Violence
Law enforcement has linked the Zizians to at least six deaths:
- A Vallejo landlord, attacked and later killed
- Richard & Rita Zajko, shot execution-style in Pennsylvania
- A U.S. Border Patrol agent, killed during a shootout with a Zizian recruit
- Recruits Emma Borhanian and Ophelia Bauckholt, both found dead
These were not isolated events. They were the result of organized ideology in action.
The “Dress Rehearsal” of Extremism
Radicalization doesn’t always arrive loudly. Often, it enters in stages—disguised as logic, activism, or intellectual debate. We call it the “Dress Rehearsal of Extremism”: when coercive ideologies hide behind moral arguments or identity-driven causes. Coercion is framed as clarity. Obedience is masked as logic.
Don’t wait for the final act. Here’s what to watch for:
- Obedience over inquiry – When questioning is punished.
- Us vs. Them mentality – When opposing views become threats, not opportunities.
- Isolation from loved ones – Dependence is created when outside influence is eliminated.
- Targeting the vulnerable – Especially those seeking identity, belonging, or healing.
- Leadership that justifies harm – Under the guise of justice or moral urgency.
These patterns are echoed in Islamist radical groups, hardline ideological movements, and online echo chambers across the world.

Rational Thinking Shouldn’t Cost Your Humanity
Ideas can liberate—or they can enslave.
It is our responsibility to discern the difference.
The Zizian story reveals how quickly lofty ideals can spiral into dangerous dogma when human dignity is dismissed and laws are ignored.
Rational thinking is powerful—but only when grounded in care for humanity, guided by humility, shaped by morality, and held accountable by law.
Without these safeguards, reason becomes a weapon. And truth becomes a tool of control.
Red Flags: Be the Author of Your Own Life
If someone tells you:
- “For the greater good, you must obey…”
- “Silence your conscience…”
- “Cut them off—they don’t understand…”
- “Are you with us or not?”
- “If you don’t do this… then you’re part of the problem…”
Pause. Reflect. Ask yourself:
- Why must truth require secrecy?
- How is hurting others a path to human rights?
- What kind of ‘logic’ demands I abandon the people I love?
- How is violating the law a path to justice?
- What other constructive, legal, and ethical alternatives exist to achieve the mission?
If there are no clear, honest answers—walk away.
Don’t let yourself become a pawn in someone else’s distorted vision.
Be the author of your own life.
Lead with integrity, not intimidation.
Champion your own path to truth, justice, and human dignity.
